It's back to school and back to work here at Summercamp. We are excited to be in the planning stages for the Co/Lab Alternative Art Fair in conjunction with Art Platform Los Angeles at the end of the month (more details to follow sooooon), but until then we cannot let a fabulous summer season end without sharing some exciting news...

Alison Owen's House Rules

Thanks to all who came out this weekend, especially those who came for the whole shebang - Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

Friday started off with Maya Gurantz's Floormap: Seduction, a self guided dance on our temporarily erected dance floor and ended with Liza Wade Green's full blown dance party - part of Hill House Mine - on the very same floor.

As the sun set, we soaked in Endurance Performance Proposition (Fade to Black, Sunset / Denoument) by Maya Gurantz.

We lounged on beanbag chairs with magazines and tequila shots while watching CamLab's Under the Blanet, a live feed performance from bedroom to Goatspace.

Sunday was a different affair. . . we traded the cool evening of Friday Night Lights for the warmth and sunshine of an afternoon on the hillside. Marcus Durkheim treats us with a careful installation of paintings and repaintings in Goatspace. Michael Carter's Appetite for Destruction tempted and repelled people with champagne and a roasted suckling pig. Suzanne Fontaine spent the afternoon interacting with guests using cellphones, string and forces in A New Kind of Fortune Telling while Erin Payne's Memory Lane for Langerstroemia gives the Crape Myrtle tree a chance to see itself for the first time in it's native setting. Matt Wardell and his rolling melon lead us down the hill with his "longish and flattish site specific installation" entitled Fig to Pataya (Ramp). Greeting us at the bottom of the hill is Aili Schmeltz's Tailings.

Alison Owen's solo show, House Rules in Guestroom adds and intertwines old and new elements to the house and it's story with repeated patterns and built succulents. And as on Friday night, we closed out the evening with Hill House Mine, a dance/theatre performance written and directed by Liza Wade Green with traveling audience members moving about the house with beer, champagne, cookies...oh, and swedish fish.

Summercamp's ProjectProject presents Friday Night Lights & Sunday Afternoons- evening of three performances and a daytime outdoor group exhibition of artists who work within the realms of exploring the unknown. Both events will feature a performance by Liza Wade Green, written during her Fall 2010 Residency at Summercamp.

Friday night:
CamLab, a collaborative project between Anna Mayer and Jemima Wyman, will start things off with a durational performance using a soft relational object in one of the bedroom's at Summercamp. All of their activities and investigations to forge intimacy "Under the Blanket" will be seen via a live feed on a monitor downstairs in Goatspace.

CamLab’s investment in the body is supplemented by an investigation into the interrelatedness of language and embodiment. Some performances use language exclusively while others depend on non-verbal exchanges. CamLab believes that a contemporary politics of pleasure must acknowledge the contiguity of language and body in facilitating the spectrum of experience between alterity and intimacy.

Likewise, Maya Gurantz deals with social issues by working in video, performance, theater, installation and community-generated projects. Gurantz’s work uses rigorously physical and playful theatricality to expose the dark histories and painful contradictions embedded in performances of power.

To end the evening, Liza Wade Green's HILL HOUSE MINE is a dance/theatre work created specifically for the midcentury modern home that hosts Summercamp’s ProjectProject. Part haunted house, part live installation, HILL HOUSE MINE takes the audience on a journey through five rooms and the backyard of the residence and explores a world where the fantasies of childhood become truth and the realities of loss are buried. The story follows a family coping with two tragic deaths. As the audience travels through the house they meet different family members and piece together a puzzle of death, dance, memory, and time.

The site-specific work is written and choreographed by Brooklyn-based theatre artist Liza Wade Green in collaboration with six performers from New York and Los Angeles. The performers use movement and text to bring the characters to life as they connect to the house’s architectural details. Hidden passageways, plastic-covered furniture, an expansive sloping yard, and a claw foot tub all add to the eerie backdrop for this interactive experience. Brick and mortar give way to the home’s memories and dreams, while the performers awaken its ghosts and rumors – all giving voice to a family in transition.

Because the the audience travels through the house Hill House Mine starts promptly at 8:45.

Sunday Afternoon:
At the bottom of the hill, Erin Payne makes visible a botanical journey that is often not considered. Payne will visually represent the ancestral home of our Crape Myrtle tree as a painted curved backdrop of tree’s landscape of origin in China. Payne explores anthropomorphic ideas of nature examining itself through human constructs by using a tall mirror allowing the tree to view itself within its native landscape. From the bottom of the hill to the top, Matt Wardell's construction of wood, fabric, found and constructed elements traverses the length of Summercamp's hill. Maybe a cantaloupe will be involved, but its hard to say.

Also near the base of the hill, Suzanne Fontaine will hold A NEW KIND OF FORTUNE TELLING*. This interactive experience

of destiny
and self.

Aili Schmeltz's Tomorrowland explores the idea that utopia can be considered not only a place or a goal, but also as the very act of striving for such a target. These hybridized structures are materializations, remnants of an ideal that never was and may never be. As fallen monuments to a utopic philosophy, they function as relics of both a “good place” and “no place.” They nod towards a bright future and a fallen past, recontextualizing and recombining materials that are both nostalgic and futuristic. An embedded sense of naiveté is inherent to the objects, formed from a chemical bond of sunshine and noir that was repeatedly cooled and heated by urban temperament and artifice. Part architectural, part fossil, part potential: these works utilize discarded building materials that appear to have crystallized within a ‘natural’ process—strata that have undergone philosophical transformation yet to be fulfilled. Michael Carter's Appetite for Destruction, also explores the role of ideology, but in social practice. By investigating the embedded but often overlooked content of the ubiquitous reception table, Carter will stage an encounter where the expectations of interaction are unknown and uncertain. Carter poses the question: Do the ideological assumptions of contemporary social practice actually limit the goal of individual empowerment? Ultimately, does power only grow out of the -metaphorical or actual - barrel of a gun?

In parallel, the illusive nature of physical reality and how our beliefs and preconceived ideas prejudice our responses to everything around us fascinates Marcus Durkheim. Objects become extensions of the self and only gain meaning by the associations we attach to them through experience, memories and emotions. A cupcake may remind one person about a wonderful experience, while another may be triggered to relive a trauma, and yet, another has no connection to cup cakes whatsoever. The objects in our life can reflect who we are, what we think and feel: inert avatars, ambassadors of self. "Things are not what they appear to be: nor are they otherwise." Surangama Sutra

For the solo show in Guestroom, Alison Owen has constructed House Rules. Owen studied the facts of the house- its narrative history, the materials and patterns found in it, the specific movement of the light across the walls. By tracking this data Owen hopes to discover part of the intangible nature of the space. Intrigued by the house’s history, 3119 Chadwick is not a static place. Owen imagined it sending out tendrils like a grapevine, expanding, covering over old bits, breaking off into new rooms and new hiding places, like the labyrinthine house in Bruno Schulz’s book “The Street of Crocodiles”. Owen's composition is an attempt to create a new and logical offshoot of the house, arrested mid-growth.

And again, to end the evening, Liza Wade Green's HILL HOUSE MINE. Because the the audience travels through the house Hill House Mine starts promptly at 7:45.

Thanks to all of you for coming and making Sunday such a grand event. Jen Smith's Pickling Demonstration started us rolling with the words, "There is no wrong way to make a pickle." Empowering us all to let our freak pickle fly!

Let's keep it going.

Summercamp’s ProjectProject presents, Start the ball rolling again, an outdoor group exhibition of artists who re-purpose ideas and translate materials. Organized by Fatima Hoang, Elonda Billera & Janice Gomez.

Mercedes Teixido’s Sisyphus and Newton, a big boulder (painted giant ball) to be pushed up or rolled down Summercamp’s ProjectProject’s hill becomes a theatrical and playful version of the task. Teixido is interested in concepts related to the domestic sphere; its histories, presence and mostly the people that inhabit them. Investigating history in many different spheres, Ryan Taber mines the canon and explores the linkages. Taber codifies and re-contextualizes his findings into newly crafted objects, drawing and sculptures.

To find the hidden forms that authority takes in art, and vice versa, Jason Kunke pursues his desire to want to be a cop, or at least, an artist who acts like a cop, investigating where authority and aesthetics coexist. Common wisdom considers authority and art as oppositional, and the artist as a transgressor of authority. Kunke thinks they contain each other, and the apparent opposition is just one way the authoritative structure manifests within art.

Understanding the notion of common standardized units, Carmine Iannoccone tests his memory of the ubiquitous “eight inch regular” and gives them an embodied presence by hand building cement blocks without measuring tools and molds. The eight inch regular is cheap and employed in the most democratic of ways by absolutely everyone, from the huge building contractor responsible for vast swaths of urban infrastructure, to the solitary homeowner building a property wall on the weekend, to the dorm-room denizen jury-rigging a quick set of bookshelves. Iannoccone creates a liquid set of correspondences and exchanges: between the art store and Home Depot, between the studio site and the construction site, between industrial engineering and fine art, between craftsmanship in sculpture and craftsmanship in the building trades, between uniformity and irregularity, between blue collars and white collars, between critical thinking and manual labor.

In an investigation of the “working prototype”, Chris Ellis contrasts the differences in the static and the kinetic object to see what relationships may happen between the two. With Prototype of Mechanics of Transition there are multiple ways to manipulate and move the structure while encountering physical parameters or limitations that guide the experience. While Ellis encourages perpetual structured change, Gaye Chan re-purposes a ceramic frog/bear from the lost and found unclaimed communal glazeware shelf to reclaim existence and poses the question, “Did it turn out so differently than intended that you fail to recognize it, or was the shock of recognition so horrifying that you simply fled?”

In secret space, Yoshie Sakai’s Dream kitchens. video installation will be investigating the “kitchen” and its related aspects from the functional to basically, the kitchen as an emotional hub. There will be videos simultaneously projected onto kitchen-related items. The videos will range from an original cooking show broadcast made specifically for this piece juxtaposed with selected scenes from various kitchens/chefs from different families, restaurants, dormitories, etc., wherever the everyday (un)magic is happening.

Summercamp’s ProjectProject will host a hands on pickle demonstration with artist and cook, Jen Smith. Smith aims to negotiate a synthesis between her formal aesthetics, social practice project of pickling and day job as a caterer. Interested in a dialogical aesthetic that encourages critical investigation, communication and fellowship, Smith hopes that is what these community canning exercises bring to participants. Please BYOV (Bring Your Own Vegetables). Space is limited. RSVP to secure your spot with a $5 donation (materials, except vegetables, included). All proceeds go to the artist.

In addition to Start the ball rolling again, Christy Roberts will take over Guestroom, an intimate space that features a single artist. She will create a platform for dialogue using local concerns of El Sereno as a driving tool. In a previous site determined project, Roberts stated “I was trying to help the land with my art project, at the end of the day, the land is bigger than I am, with an agenda larger than mine. The process itself, then, became a symbolization of our relationship to the land. We can affect the land, but ultimately, the land has the final say. By destroying the land, we do not kill the planet, we make it for ourselves.”

The past few weeks have been busy here at ye olde Summercamp. It's foxtail season again, and you know what that means! Weeds are getting whacked as we ramp up for the summer season.

In preseason news, Occidental College's Contemporary Art/Institutions in LA class led by the multi-talented Aandrea Stang, dropped by for an informational lecture, tour and glass of refreshing iced tea (with an optional Red Vine).

We were also invited by Christy Roberts to lead a discussion at our (FEJ's) alma mater for the SNATCH Disco- a Claremont Graduate University student discussion group on the subject of Political, Public, and Activist Art, and Alternative/Non-Traditional Spaces. It was fun to visit the old haunt and hear about all of the new goings on. There's a lot of activity going on at CGU and their open studios are May 1st so you can check it out for yourself!

To help with all of this (and more!) pregame activity, we have a new member of the Summercamp's ProjectProject team. We would like to introduce you Sean Tan, our Intern from University Of California Riverside. He introduced himself to us this past January after a lecture we gave to his class Proximity and Access: An Artists' Field Guide to LA Art. We are so excited to have Sean on board, please welcome him and introduce yourself at our next shindig.

COLLECTIVE SHOW LAUNCHES LOS ANGELES EXHIBITION
Los Angeles, CA – January 11, 2011 – Collective Show is pleased to present “Collective Show Los
Angeles 2011,” an artist-organized exhibition of contemporary art groups recently established in Los
Angeles. This collaboratively curated “group show of group shows” features artist-run spaces and projects
formed in the past five years.

Previously realized in New York in 2009 and 2010, Collective Show exhibits local art groups that work in
a growing space between established non-profit organizations and commercial galleries. These groups
explore a wide range of collaborative approaches and missions, often in flexible and adaptive conditions
with an emphasis on communities and conversations.

Over 30 groups will exhibit artwork, publications and posters during the show at a newly renovated space
in Chinatown. In addition, screenings, performances and talks will take place during the exhibition. A

Cheers to a New Year from Wintercamp at Summercamp!

After a hectic and amazing Fall Residency at Cypress College your camp counselors were able to get a little hibernation in during the Los Angeles winter. We wanted to salute, bow and curtsy to all of you who have graced us with support in sharing 2010 through visiting, exhibiting, installing, listening, speaking, rolling down hills, eating pizza, cross stitching, bicycling, moderating, air guitaring, taping floors & walls, toasting marshmallows, Google waving, making instruments, jazzing it up, being real, obsessing, breathing true oxy air, opening your arms, organizing while holding hands and everything in between.

Here's a few images from our residency at Cypress College. The students were a blast to work with. Thank you to Devon Tsuno, Ed Giardina, Dan Stephens and the rest of the art department for inviting us into their space and allowing us to take over for a few months. Special thanks to the exhibition design and portfolio review students. The experience was truly awesome.

A closing panel conversation: non locality and the transference of space, energy and memory moderated by Tarra Stevenson, writer & educator will include panelists: Carol Cheh, performance art writer, David P. Earle IV, artist, writer & educator, Douglas Rompasky, nomadic computer programmer—traveling for the past two years around the world on his bicycle, Christian Tedeschi, the artist representative of the current exhibition, and Liza Wade Green, performing artist who will be at Summercamp for a residency at the end of October.

Tarra Stevenson is a language lover. She utilizes the generative device of constraintbased penning whenever possible. She creates written nonsense. Her work deals directly with the topic of creation of text and writing anxiety, specifically writing anxiety in attempting to write the female body, the “ot(her).” In utilizing purposeful and repeated grammatical and spelling errors as metaphors for the evolution of the writing process, she hopes to achieve this anxiety. It is through the creation of the text that the reader can fully appreciate the synthesis and evolution of the text, as well as that of the characters.

Writing the female body is an endeavor that as a conversation deals with its antithesis: not writing the female body; writing the female body in terms of the “other,” the male body, or the heteronormative body; or, writing the body in the language of the “other.” In her interpretation of a woman battling an androcentric world, the textual anxiety isrepresentative of such a battle. Its circularity, its roundness, is directly opposed to a linear, male constructed writing. The language is as close to the opposite of phallocentric language as possible, in that because it is spelled and used incorrectly, and yet the meaning is still coherent, the language has attempted to be wiped of its male-ness. In subverting the language at its roots, its very basis, she is attempting to subvert its dominance and heteronormativity. The words, therefore, are themselves symbols of the male dominant culture, turned upside down by consistent inconsistencies in their use. The (revisionary) structure of the story also allows for the possibility of alternate and endless storylines, again subverting the typical linear narrative structure.

She dabbles in screenwriting as well. She and her writing partner Jenava Hudek have completed Summerʼs Eve: A Lifetime Spoof and are currently at work on their next totally outrageous project. Her most current work is a novel based on Security Mom and the constraints women place on themselves -- an American form of female-circumcision. Carol Cheh is a writer and curator based in Los Angeles. She is the founder of Another Righteous Transfer!, a blog devoted to documenting LA's performance art scene. Her curatorial projects have included You Don't Bring Me Flowers: An Evening of Re-Performances (POST, 2010) and Signals: A Video Showcase (Orange County Museum of Art, 2008). She also served as exhibition coordinator for Tubular!, a show of CSU Long Beach MFA candidates curated by Doug Harvey (Pacific Design Center, 2010) and has diverse work experience at a number of museums, including SITE Santa Fe and MOCA. Carol is currently working on her master's thesis in art history, which deals with mutated notions of authorship in the work of new media artist Ryan Trecartin.

David P. Earle is an artist, writer and educator who lives in Los Angeles. Recent projects include "Open Arms," a puppet theater / video peep show created for the "The Real Show" at Summercamp Project Project (Los Angeles) and "The Distracted Drawing Station," an interactive installation at the Armory Center for the Arts (Pasadena, CA). He is the editor of "The Open Daybook" a compilation of original artwork by three hundred and sixty five artists to be released by Mark Batty Publisher in October, and curator of an exhibition by the same name which will be hosted by Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (Los Angeles) in January 2011.

Douglas Rompasky graduated University of Hawaii with a degree in Computer Science and immediately jumped into the work force in Honolulu—did that gig for four years or so and saved up some money. After a while Romapsky decided it wasn't the right thing for him, quit his job and decided to travel around the world on a bike. He spent a year in New Zealand followed by five months in South East Asia, on to Europe and finally riding from Boston to Seattle down to Los Angeles; just in time to participate in the panel.

Christian Tedeschi, one of the artists in the current exhibition, has exhibited his work extensively in the Los Angeles area. In addition to creating work, he is a co-founder of Object Orange, a community services organization in Detroit and has also organized shows with Phantom Galleries in Long Beach. Tedeschi teaches Sculpture at California State University Northridge.

Liza Wade Green is currently an artist in residence at Summercamp creating a site specific performance work to be produced next season. While completing her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Long Island University’s Friends World Program, Liza studied conflict resolution in Northern Ireland, worked with children in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and developed a bi-lingual youth theatre program in Wilmington, North Carolina. In London, Liza was a member of Soho Theatre’s Young Writers Program and studied acting at the Tricycle Theatre.

Since moving to Brooklyn in 2003, Liza has worked extensively in New York’s downtown theatre community. She is a member of The Stolen Chair Theatre Company where she has collaboratively created and performed in six original works including: Kill Me Like You Mean It, Kinderspiel, Commedia dell’ Artemisia, The Accidental Patriot, Theatre is Dead and So Are You, and Quantum Poetics. She has been a collaborator/performer in Phil Soltanoff’s Sit, Stand, Walk, Lie Down on Governors Island and Gemini Collision Works’ George Betaille’s Bathrobe at the Brick Theater. Her original plays have been seen at San Francisco State University, Soho Theatre in London, and the Academy Theatre in SC.

Liza has worked as a teaching artist for Creative Arts Team, The New York Student Shakespeare Festival, and Vital Theatre Company. She has also managed the Grants and Services department at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council where she led professional development workshops and helped to assist hundreds of New York artists and arts organizations to receive public funding.

Summercamp is a home in the neighborhood in El Sereno, Los Angeles designed and built by Al Kaelin in 1950. The homemade modern house, full of pass-throughs and secret spaces, currently functions as an artist live/work space and hosts Project Project. Founded by Fatima Hoang, Elonda Billera, and Janice Gomez, Project Project showcases exhibitions, performances, lectures, workshops, screenings and events by activating multiple parts of the property—installing works in the sloping backyard, projecting videos on the living room ceiling, and showcasing musical performances in the old goat pen.

For Fall Residency I, the eight artists, Chelsea Dean, Justin Michell, Gina Osterloh, Julie Schustack, Christian Tedeschi, Bari Ziperstein, Corinne Kamiya, and Falcon Eddy, propel this energy by building an interpretation of Summercamp’s Project Project inside the gallery; pulling from past exhibitions, honing the history of the house, and making it mobile.

Summercamp is a home in the neighborhood in El Sereno, Los Angeles designed and built by Al Kaelin in 1950. The homemade modern house, full of pass-throughs and secret spaces, currently functions as an artist live/work space and hosts Project Project, Founded by Fatima Hoang, Elonda Billera, and Janice Gomez, Project Project showcases exhibitions, performances, lectures, workshops, screenings and events by activating multiple parts of the property – installing works in the sloping backyard, projecting videos on the living room ceiling, and showcasing musical performances in the old goat pen.

For Fall Residency I, the eight artists, Chelsea Dean, Falcon Eddy, Corinne Kamiya, Justin Michell, Gina Osterloh, Julie Schustack, Christian Tedeschi, and Bari Ziperstein will propel this energy by building an interpretation of Summercamp’s Project Project inside the gallery; pulling from past exhibitions, honing the history of the house, and making it mobile. Dealing with the themes of home in transition, function into entropy, connectedness and resourcefulness – the on-site collaboration will be an active part of the process and a learning experience for Cypress College exhibition design students who will assist in the construction, events, and docent tours of the show.

Installed works in the gallery span from densely textured architectural photographs, a miniature kitchen in a fruit fly trap and sets inspired by pass-throughs to a large scale tape installation. Each laying the foundation for open collaborative interaction with works such as a fully functional staircase made from salvaged wood which can double as bleachers to watch Falcon Eddy’s performance. Trying to make sense of movement and memory, Corinne Kamiya will be featured in Guestroom. In Kamiya’s 1 inch = 1mm scale apartment, she creates a portable safety among the chaos of change.

A closing panel conversation: non locality and the transference of space, energy and memory moderated by Tarra Stevenson, writer and; educator will include panelists: Carol Cheh, performance art writer, David P. Earle IV, artist, writer and educator; Douglas Rompasky, nomadic computer programmer--traveling for the past two years around the world on his bicycle, Christian Tedeschi, the artist representative of the current exhibition, and Liza Wade Green, performing artist who will be at Summercamp for a residency at the end of October.

Cypress College Gallery will be open from September 7 to September 29 for the public to view the installation process and collaborations with Cypress College students culminating in a reception on Thursday, September 30 from 6 to 8pm to view the completed project. The completed project will be on view from September 30 – October 28, 2010.

Summercamp's Project Project presents Obsession Obsessive Obsessed, an outdoor group exhibition of artists who either through material, compulsion, process or concept are consumed, fixated, or possessed.

Paul Pescador is an artist and artist organizer. His actions, gestures and performances deal with issues surrounding social disconnection and communal space. For Obsession Obsessive Obsessed, Pescador will display photographs of created pairings between seemingly unrelated objects in the private spaces of Summercamp’s Project Project. Aragna Ker blurs individual identity through experiential consumptions to create a digestive process that expels objective matter to be inspected, avoided or re-consumed by the audience. Subliminal bells gently prompt viewers to dig through the layered depth of intuition; thus, cultivating space for onlooker to become participator. Public presentation of this work creates its own virtual hybrid of culture and globalism.

In another installment of The Lost Artworks, Matt MacFarland will create comic drawings to document his experiences at the opening. The Lost Artworks, MacFarland’s ongoing project, adheres to a structure that suggests a serial production without the series. Any medium can be employed in the Lost Artworks. Video can be next to a sculpture made of dryer lint, drawings next to a wall painting resembling a stain. The potential meaning of each part of the installation, similar to how words are structured in a sentence, is contingent on the piece next to it. Rochelle Botello’s Dreamboat is fueled by her experiences, both real and imagined. Botello uses cardboard, paper, tape and fabric to create absurd scenarios that engage issues of identity, desire, and control thereby exposing the complex and contradictory nature of everyday life. Meriel Stern is transforming the topography of Summercamp’s Project Project by crocheting a covering blanket for the land out of clothesline and a path of round crocheted galvanized steel wire and silicone nipples.

Through constructed membranes, Jamison Carter explores the existence of spirit(s), phantoms, thoughts and things that have no physical form. Carter’s precarious linear structures attempt to give form to the physically undefined while remaining tenuous in their construction and defined by their negative space. Kris Chatterson paints to explore abstract possibilities within self-prescribed limitations. The limitations serve as a conceptual framework to keep his process focused. Each painting begins with a series of structural marks that provide an armature for the looser marks. After being convinced of his motives, the resulting marks become passing thoughts in paint and time.

The OxyTree® is an indoor-outdoor installation by artist Laurie Sumiye that asks the viewer to imagine a near-future where clean air is a premium, and trees are sold and marketed as “all-natural air filters.” The work considers how obsessively buying green products blurs the reality of sustainability and science, and how our belief systems and cultural habits shape what we perceive our own health and well-being is related to the environment. Nancy Popp’s projects investigate the body’s relationship to site and architecture, along with the risk and vulnerability of serious play. For Obsession Obsessive Obsessed, Popp will invite audience participation and utilize the slope of backyard hill.

And as a compliment to Obsession Obsessive Obsessed, Hector Oviedo will be featured in Guestroom. Oviedo’s drawings, often religious in nature, use a dense vivid color palette and extensive patterning suggestive of a rapturous experience. Oviedo creates and shows his work at First Street Gallery Art Center, an exhibition resource and arts management center for adults with developmental disabilities in Claremont, California.

Summercamp's Project Project presents, The Real Show (title pending) an outdoor group exhibition of artists who push the parameters of realism and expand its definition. Xu DaRocha’s folded fabric oil paintings embody the juxtaposition of superficial casualness and emotional complexity. DaRocha confronts and celebrates the chaos and the order within the name of beauty, often spending hours, even days, folding fabrics and working on the detailed creases and wrinkles before starting the paintings, so that the images will carry the negotiations and the tensions between the sense of reality and emotional fragments. While working at the Gardner Museum in Boston, Sean Dungan photographed the inside of the museum at night. Dungan’s grid of four photographs are dark, quiet and may be boundary-destabilizing. Carly Steward also uses photography to investigate topics such as exhibition design, display, installation, sculpture, and abstraction. With each photograph, or sculpture constructed, Steward aims to reflect a specific architectural detail within the space that is being displayed. The photographic sculptures use texture and space to enable the viewer to acknowledge his/her body. By creating a structure for the photograph to be displayed on rather than hanging it on the wall the viewer becomes more aware of the photograph as an object. For The Real Show (title pending), Steward will display three 13 by 19” framed photographs on pedestal bases with the intention that during the duration of the show, the images will fade and change with elements revealing the ethereal nature of photography in contrast to the sculptural material.

Engaged in the social and political impact of architecture and appropriated sites, Jill Newman explores improvised structures that exist somewhere between architecture and prop. By removing their original context and rendering these constructions fantastical and romanticized, Newman both celebrates and historicizes these subjects, shifting the image from a document to a signifier of self-sufficiency and resourceful ingenuity. Pushing the symbolic potential of these pictures further, Newman recently began focusing on the relationship between abstraction and meaning by using flags and embellishments from these structures as points of formal departure for non-representational painting and sculpture. Sergio Torres-Torres’s practice is based on an interdisciplinary approach determined by the conceptual, historical and material necessities of the project. For The Real Show (title pending), Torres-Torres has crafted a landmark sign overlooking the hills of El Sereno to find a balance between content and form. Also interested in the openness of the urban vista, Steven Bankhead’s bench will allow for a contemplation of

Karen Lofgren and Miwa Matreyek will be featured in Open Arms. An art space delineated in tattoo ink on the forearms of two Johns, John Barlog and John Burtle—Open Arms consists of two 2" x 4" plots of skin that have hosted drawings, petite paintings, mini-sculptures, micro-performances. For The Real Show (title pending), David P. Earle was invited to organize a project in Open Arms.

Dan Crane is a journalist, author, musician, and competitive air-guitarist. He is the author of “To Air is Human: One Man’s Quest to Become the World’s Greatest Air Guitarist” (Riverhead Books, 2006), and the co-star of the award-winning documentary, Air Guitar Nation. In 2004, Crane gave up his career as an educational software producer to pursue his dream of becoming the world’s best air guitarist. Under the nom d’air Björn Türoque (pronounced to-RAWK), he competed in numerous competitions, repeatedly coming in second place. He retired in 2005 and now emcees air guitar competitions around the world and will be hosting Aireoke (the air guitar equivalent to karaoke). It is an exciting venture to have air guitar leave the bright lights of the stage and find a home in the intimacy of The Livingroom.

We were reminiscing about the days of summer when foxtails cut your heel and figs fell into your mouth. Oh, those days! But alas, we forgot to share our lovely pic from the November/December issue of Artillery magazine (killer text on art, you know). We were fortunate to have both Tulsa Kinney and Anne Martens meander the yard and guestroom during the Big Ass show. We struck a few poses for the camera but thankfully Will Long's work and Al Kaelin's creation (the casa) made the cut. Check out the article on page 22 with an image of Jason Manley's work to boot! If you can't find the magazine, let us know-- maybe you can come over and read it.

Looking out the window, the grass is lush, the foxtails are dormant, and the fig tree is bare. Oh, and the picnic table is still at the bottom of the hill. Any volunteers to help drag it up? We have till May(be).

Summercamp's Project Project presents JazzCircle, a music driven event in conjunction with Art Los Angeles Contemporary Fair’s alternative space tour. The event will be featuring musicians Abe Lagrimas Jr. and Robert S. Hilton. Organized by Fatima Hoang, Elonda Billera & Janice Gomez.

As a storyteller and musician, Robert S. Hilton utilizes natural and found material to create unique musical instruments. He will be on hand to help you find your own musical voice and sound by making a tiny flute out of a PVC pipe, balloon, and rubber band that you play by touching the balloon to change the pitch.

If you are interested in making larger instruments, we will provide some materials and tools, but please also bring an assortment of additional materials that can resonate (such as a coffee canister, cigar box, cookie tins, PVC pipe) and anything else you think can create sound.

In the living room, Abe Lagrimas Jr. (drums) has invited fellow jazz musicians, Yohei Nakamura (guitar) and Miko Espanol (bass), to perform original songs, improvisations, experiments and standards. And maybe we can convince Abe to bring out his ukulele!

Please join us, Sunday, January 31 from 2-6PM. Vegetarian curry will be served around 3, jazz in the living room will start at 4, and instrument making is all you.

Summercamp's Project Project presents Immersion Program: somewhere between the dust and the light, a video exhibition featuring works projected on the ceiling by James Boulton, Spencer Douglass & Gustavo Herrera, Matt MacFarland, Kayo Nakamura, Telefantasy Studios, Kai Vierstra, with Tarra Stevenson from Reading Radio in Guestroom. Music by Métal Rouge. Organized by Fatima Hoang, Elonda Billera, and Janice Gomez.

The Lost Artworks, an ongoing project by Matt MacFarland, addresses the interdependence of opposing terms such as success and failure, life and death and tragedy and comedy. The series investigates cliché comedic tropes as a reminder of our humanity and vulnerability. Undertaking mortality through humor MacFarland's work acknowledges that no matter what we do, everything is futile, insignificant and simultaneously significant because we will not be around for long. Spencer Douglass and Gustavo Herrera's video, American stars and Mars, is an interpretation of the classic Neil Young album American Stars and Bars- specifically the photograph on the album cover. The video activates this still image in an exploration of excess and the 'morning after'. The morning after a night a week a month a year of heady indulgence and blind consumption.

Telefantasy Studios is dedicated to the creation of realms full of alternate realities populated with extravagantly and exactingly created beings. Creators, Jennifer Juniper Stratford and Christine Adolph, explore the theme of fantasy and memories of forgotten futures in their most recent series The Multinauts via an innovative mix of creature and miniature model making with 2D animation. Episodic story lines follow three heroes through time and space as they battle The Norks, a mutant empire hell bent on creating chaos in a post nuke universe. In contrast, Kayo Nakamura pairs subtle movements with sentimental songs to create poetic moments out of unassuming situations.

James Boulton's staccato animations isolate and collage together real world images with patterns, sounds, and drawings. Using a vibrant saturated palette, Boulton's video alternates between optically blending and clashing sounds. Kai Vierstra's Hammering Nails also uses manipulation of audio. As a loose continuation of his father’s wave research with MIT/Lincoln Laboratory’s group 38 “Air Defense Systems”, Viestra experiments with slow and low frequencies that could induce a bodily reaction indicated by the lycanthropic phenomenon.

In addition to the multiple timed video screenings, Tarra Stevenson of Reading Radio will address a different analog(ue) realm of the time based program by utilizing the natural ebb and flow of reading aloud.

Métal Rouge was formed in 2006 by Helga Fassonaki and Andrew Scott in Auckland, New Zealand with no aim but to open themselves to the spontaneous psych tonalism running through the underbelly of popular music like a vein of pure lightning. Birthed from the rich history of New Zealand underground they began to mold a sound comprised equally of the forward motion of ecstatic jazz and the drugged stasis of NYC loft minimalism circa ’66. Using electric guitar, vocals and amplified santur as their primary instruments, they forged a new vocabulary of unrefined free spiritual music. Relocating to Los Angeles, they toured the US, adding lap steel and pedal steel to their arsenal. Drummer/Trombonist Caitlin M. Mitchell joined in 2009, bringing with her a night/day spectrum ranging from pure brass drone through to aggressive free rock.

Summercamp's Project Project presents GO BIG OR GO HOME: big ass sculpture show, an outdoor group exhibition featuring works large in scale and in scope with Melissa Manfull in Guestroom. Organized by Fatima Hoang, Elonda Billera & Janice Gomez.

Interested in an agave plant from the neighborhood that had rotting fruit stabbed through its top spikes, Kristi Lippire's sculpture combines local plant forms made of papier-mache and steel rods to emphasize humor and danger. Richard Haley investigates the interface between the body and objects and the extent to which these relationships produce the self in an attempt to locate the corporeal self in a postindustrial culture. Objects as literal manifestations of these relationships between body and object – the podiums that we speak from, the crutches that we lean on, the flagpoles that we articulate nation through. By replicating and intervening into natural systems like tide patterns and tree growth, Haley imposes a man-made logic onto resistant natural, futile technologies intentionally call into question the whereabouts of agency among human and natural bodies. Breathing new life into a 99 cent store toy, Lorraine Cleary Dale's humourous sculpture questions concepts such as fear, change, chance, and the deep desire for recovery; while also exploring greater environmental issues the world faces today. The question remains can we as a culture or as individuals retain a hopeful and positive outlook when the stakes are down?

Don't Put Nothing in It, Unless You Feel It, by Nicole Antebi,is a recreation of Darwin's two by three foot weed garden used for experiments in the natural selection of plant species. The project elaborates on the experiment to include readings by the poet, Amaranth Borsuk, and experimental sounds of Clay Chaplin and others using sound and language as a way of beckoning plants to the surface. Another work dug into the ground, El Sereno Jaw by Josh Callaghan, is composed of 16 concrete teeth of a lower jaw set in the dirt like gums. Will Long offers unexpected experiences by altering the mundane identity and function of everyday materials. Through ductwork with audio components installed on the hillside, Long broadens the viewers perspective regarding the built environment. Jason Manley's work references ornate, fluorescent Hollywood signs and vintage Las Vegas billboards, where the context of advertisement is changed to a platform for poetic prose. The text addresses the here and now, and is intended to stimulate awareness to place, breaking the monotony of corporate sameness, and merging the boundaries between personal and public.

And as a compliment to GO BIG OR GO HOME, Melissa Manfull's drawing and its accompanying potential space satellites will be featured in Guestroom. Interested in the surface of concrete as an opaque barrier, Manfull's drawings are based on soviet modernist architecture, specifically the disintegrating Palaces of Culture. Cold and sedate, using concrete as the primary material, these palaces were created as places of leisure run by the corresponding trade unions and government to promote various forms of art and culture. Manfull's satellite drawings embody the absurdity of the palaces, where their intention and design are in conflict. This conflict also exemplifies the reality of modernity; new designs undermining the proposed idealism.

Summercamp's Project Project presents Slick, an outdoor group exhibition, to engage, reinforce and deny the definitions of finish fetish, too cool for school and the sly trickster.

Emilie Halpern will be exhibiting a new video recently shot in the woods of New Hampshire during the artist's residency at Macdowell Colony. Also on view is Solar Music Box (2004-2007), a music box that plays whenever the sun shines on it. In the music box the tuned steel comb is from the song The Way We Were, and the revolving cylinder with pins is from Candle in the Wind. The two elements combined create a completely new musical composition. Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, Ryan Lamb attempts to examine reality at the basest levels, from scratch. Relying more on investigation than expression, Lamb uses observation of the ordinary observed by extraordinary means. Providing an experience similar to the creative act itself, rather than offering them the mere residue of that act.

Non-stop Picture Show is a new ongoing series following the evolution of the Hollywood image. These photographs of Jennifer Juniper Stratford chronicle inspiration derived from fandom, escapism through technology, nature, and the strange effects of the media. A collection of her work is featured in Hijacked Volume One, Australia and America a new book which presents the most diverse and provocative new photography from Australia and America, published by Big City Press. Using found objects Amy Maloof communicates ideas of falsiness. Whether inspired by the weather, or an even more interesting topic of conversation, tropical mood pendulums swing between two invisible trees creating imaginary kid n' play betwixt (wo)man and arty facts.

Touch and touching, where things meet in inner and outer space, especially when those spaces collide without meeting. Cheating light tethered to its shadow, wrapping and warping. Those bodies without thickness that make things thick. Constantina Zavitsanos works in time-based sculpture using projection, simple motors, found objects, wood, glass, wax, water, motion sensors, holograms, mirrors, and video to produce un-tricky visual magic of the mechanical, optical, and tactile varieties. Her objects refer to utility and function and become defunct in real time. From expanding the frontiers of the micro and macro, to revealing the depths of the oceans and the infinity of space, Ture Gufstofson's glass opens doors to that which is not readily visible and unveils new perspectives. In Michael 2011, Michael Trefzger draws recognizable but disparate parts together in ways that depict a near future that is neither utopian or the end of the world, but more of the same.

Existing and adjusting, Los Angeles painter, Devon Tsuno, describes a city of sprawl. But it is also a massively layered city that is growing amidst an unsound ecology -- people battling for space via hostile takeovers resulting in violent concussive movements. We Angelenos, like Robert Duvall’s army officer in Apocalypse Now, breath in deeply and say “Someday this war’s gonna end…” to this environment requires, a meditative calm, with a decisive train of thought, which results in an unwavering sense of home.

And as a compliment to Slick, Malisa Humphrey's collages will be featured in the Guestroom. Humphrey’s collages combine appropriated images and personal and historical ephemera with watercolor and pencil drawings to illustrate conspiracy theories and other narratives.

The exhibition includes 10 artists whose work speaks to themes focusing on belonging to a landscape and/or moving in place. The inaugural event will be on a hillside overlooking El Sereno .

The new work of Ben Shaffer can be defined as: direct, personal, and current engagement. Shaffer has created an everyday ecosystem for Summercamp that models how the complexes surrounding us can be manipulated in order to create a different structure of interaction, sustainability, understanding, and existence. Also in response to the existing space, Anita Bunn’s video and still image continue an exploration of the act of noticing. Engaging with objects we often fail to see in the context of a sprawling urban environment and addresses an ongoing concern with the subtle shifts that occur with the slightest movement or change in perspective.

In Canned Speech by David P. Earle, a tin can attached to a long piece of string disappears into the woods. Sounds come from the other side. Something is overheard, an impossible conversation. Macha Suzuki tells real life stories about his experiences dressed up with elaborate fabrications some would call lies.

In goat space, Matt Kennedy’s half tone Xeroxes of seemingly banal landscape photographs will coexist with the abstracted landscapes and mindscapes of Sean Gall. Gall’s drawings come out of trips to Ireland to visit his mother juxtaposed with hikes in Los Angeles, as well as remembered patterns from Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasure" album cover designed by Peter Saville.

Interlacing the dialogue spoken from RW Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra Van Kant, with the silent video footage of sisters, Tsubaki Yasuko and Hayashi Noriko, Julie Spielman investigates the cross-cultural relationships between women, and their susceptible nature to outsider interpretation. Gina Kelly in collaboration with composer, Gary Schultz also brings the other side of the world to the audience in a site specific sound installation using subtle details of evolution and interaction. Anntipode invites the audience into an experience outside of their own.

In the lower field, Christian Tedeschi inverts the stability of ladders, and Carrie Whitney will construct a temporary suspension in an apple tree. Through a process of trial and error, ideas of support and impulse become a physical representation.
